A calendar inspired by the golden age of rail
Penhaligon’s Christmas collection this year is inspired by vintage travel trunks and “the golden era of train travel, when the journey home was as important as the destination”, according to the Selfridges listing. The calendar takes that literally: three stacked trunks in green and burgundy, each opening into a chest of numbered drawers, with the listing promising “twenty-four of Penhaligon’s finest offerings” to make the run-up to Christmas “most fragrant and frivolous”.

What we think
At £430 for 24 drawers, each one costs about £17.90, and the stated worth of £750 is roughly 1.7 times the price. That ratio is typical of luxury fragrance houses, which rarely pack their calendars with “free” value, so the real question is what you get to wear.
The answer is: a lot of perfume. Add up the bottles and there is 172ml of fragrance inside, and the two 30ml eaux de parfum are proper, keepable sizes. Halfeti is one of the house’s best-known scents, and with Empressa alongside it you finish December with two bottles you would actually carry around rather than a drawer of samples. The 9ml and 10ml sprays cover a wide sweep of the range, including several of the animal-headed Portraits scents such as The Tragedy of Lord George and Changing Constance, which is a smart way to find your next full bottle.
The weaker drawers are the 35g candles and the 30ml body products: pleasant, but small, and they take up a third of the doors. The 5ml minis of The Cut, Elisabethan Rose and A London Dandy are more of a sniff test than something to wear for weeks.
How does it compare?
It sits at the very top of this year’s fragrance calendars. The Jo Malone London Christmas Kist costs £375 for 25 treats including 13 colognes, and was in stock at LOOKFANTASTIC on 17 October 2026; it gives you more doors for less money, but only one 30ml cologne. Diptyque’s £420 calendar leans further towards candles and home fragrance.
