Rawlins x Wilding Somerset Cider Box launches: Chisel Jersey and four more Somerset ciders for £90 a quarter

Two of Somerset’s most respected small cider makers have teamed up on a box. Rawlins Family Cider and Wilding have launched the Rawlins x Wilding Somerset Cider Box, a quarterly case of five 750ml Somerset ciders plus a wild card, priced at £90 with free delivery. The first box sold as a one-off case until 18 October and ships on 21 October, and the makers say future boxes will also be offered as a £90 subscription.

What is the Rawlins x Wilding Somerset Cider Box?

The idea is simple. Every box contains one bottle from Rawlins, one from Wilding and three from a changing cast of other Somerset makers working in the county’s traditional styles. The sixth item is a wild card: a book this time, but the makers mention cans of cider, a bottle of spirits or an art print as possibilities for later boxes. Each case also comes with written notes on the ciders and the people behind them.

Simon Rawlins and Wilding’s Sam Leach had both looked at running a cider club before, but filling one with enough different bottles is a tall order for a small producer. Splitting the job between two makers, and bringing in their neighbours, solves that. “There are some amazing makers in Somerset which just aren’t talked about enough,” Simon Rawlins told CiderChat’s eCiderNews.

What is in the first box?

The launch box leans towards natural, Rural Method ciders, the bottle conditioned sparkling style that many Somerset makers favour:

• Rawlins Chisel Jersey 2024: an award winning single variety, sparkling keeved cider, and the standout bottle of the case.
• Stockley Cider Leigh 2022: a single village blend, medium and still, made by the Rural Method.
• Wilding Major/Minor 2023: a multi orchard, still, dry cider.
• Wilding Burlands 2023: a single orchard, medium dry sparkling Rural Method cider.
• Wild West Frontier Press 2024: an off dry sparkling Rural Method cider.
• The Folklore of Trees by Aidan Meighan: the wild card in this first case.

That is five full 750ml bottles, all listed as vegan, from four different producers. Keeved ciders such as Chisel Jersey are naturally sweeter and lower in alcohol than many dry ciders, so the case covers a good spread of styles.

Price, delivery and the subscription

Is it worth it?

If you already enjoy natural or farmhouse cider, this is an easy recommendation: two makers with strong reputations choosing bottles from their neighbours is about as good a filter as you will find.
