Field Doctor

  • Dietitian-designed frozen meals
  • From £7.49

Field Doctor makes frozen ready meals with a twist: every dish is designed by dietitians around a specific health need, from IBS and low FODMAP eating to weight loss, menopause, heart health and GLP-1 medication. You pick from a menu of more than 60 meals, choose a regular delivery or a one-off box, and stack them in the freezer for days when cooking is not happening. Meals cost £7.49 to £8.99 for one person, and you can skip, pause or cancel any time. It is not cheap, but if you are managing a gut condition or a diet with real rules, there is very little else like it in the UK.

What is Field Doctor?

Field Doctor is a small British company founded by Martin Dewey, the man behind Square Pie, and registered dietitian Sasha Watkins. Its pitch is food as medicine: meals built on peer-reviewed nutrition research by an in-house dietitian, then cooked in small batches by chefs at its kitchen in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, and flash frozen. It launched what Monash University, the team behind the low FODMAP diet, described as the UK’s first low FODMAP ready meals, and its gluten free meals are certified gluten free and safe for coeliacs.

That focus is what sets it apart. Most ready meal brands sell convenience with a healthy halo. Field Doctor organises its whole menu around conditions and goals, and each meal page lists full nutrition, ingredients and allergens. Field Doctor also says The Telegraph rated it the UK’s best healthy ready meal.

What can you order?

The full menu runs to around 70 dishes across several ranges, and many meals appear in more than one. The ranges include:

  • Mediterranean: the core range, with dishes like chicken tagine, coq au vin, cottage pie, chicken tikka masala, salmon grain bowl and vegetable korma.
  • Low FODMAP: for IBS, with low FODMAP versions of favourites such as fish pie, chilli con carne, risotto, Thai green curry and Malaysian tofu curry.
  • Gluten free, high protein, lower carb and lowest calorie filters for specific diets.
  • Weight management and GLP-1: high-protein “companion” meals in varied portion sizes, curated with a GLP-1 specialist dietitian for people whose appetite is reduced by weight loss medication.
  • Smaller range: smaller portions that are a source of protein and fortified with vitamin D, aimed at older eaters and lighter appetites.
  • Menopause, heart health, PMOS (formerly PCOS) and breast cancer ranges, each built around the nutrients that matter for that condition.

Most meals are gluten free and nut free, and there are vegetarian and vegan options. You can filter the menu by allergen and “free from” ingredients, or take a 30-second quiz that builds a personalised menu for you. There are also ready-made bundles of 7 meals, such as a vegan bundle or a plant diversity bundle, if you would rather not choose dish by dish.

A single portion is about 380g and most come in at roughly 400 to 500 calories; a double portion is about 760g in one dish. Everything goes from freezer to plate in a few minutes, cooked from frozen.

How much does Field Doctor cost?

What Price
Single serve meal £7.49 to £8.99
Double serve meal £11.29 to £14.49
Minimum order £50 (and 7 meals for a subscription)
Delivery £6.50 to £23 depending on location
Free delivery On orders over £67.50 in most areas

Let’s do the real maths. Seven single meals at around £8 each is roughly £56, which clears the minimum but not the free delivery threshold, so you add at least £6.50. That puts each meal at about £9. Order nine or ten meals and delivery is free in most of the country, bringing the real cost back to the menu price of £7.49 to £8.99. Doubles are better value per portion, at roughly £6 to £7 a head.

So Field Doctor costs more than supermarket ready meals and about the same as other premium frozen brands. You are paying for the dietitian-led design, the certifications and the fact that low FODMAP or coeliac-safe meals are hard to find ready made at all. Subscribing does not bring a discount on meal prices; it simply saves you reordering. Field Doctor also runs an NHS discount scheme.

How it works

  1. Take the quiz or browse the menu and add meals to your basket.
  2. Choose a regular delivery and its frequency, or a one-off box.
  3. Pick your delivery day at checkout. Field Doctor delivers Tuesday to Saturday.
  4. Future orders repeat on the same weekday. You get a reminder email before each one, and you can edit your meals up to 2 days before the order processes.
  5. Store everything in the freezer and heat when you need it.

Prefer the phone? Field Doctor takes orders on 01225 941141, which is handy for older relatives, and it will post you a free printed menu.

Delivery

Meals arrive frozen in an insulated box that keeps them frozen well into the evening, so you can leave delivery instructions if you will be out. Deliveries inside the M25 go with HIVED, some parts of Scotland with DPD, and everywhere else with Yodel. The courier emails a time slot on the morning of delivery. Do not ask the driver to come back another day: the parcel is not kept frozen and will be thrown away.

There are gaps in the map. Field Doctor does not deliver to the Scottish Highlands and islands, the Isle of Man, the Scilly Isles, the Channel Islands, Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, and the Isle of Wight may cost extra. Check your postcode before you plan around it.

Freezer space matters too. A single meal box measures 17.5 x 13 x 5cm, a double 26 x 17 x 5cm, so a 7-meal order needs roughly a full freezer drawer. The outer box, sleeves and trays are all household recyclable.

Skipping, pausing and cancelling

There is no lock-in. Log in to your account and open Manage subscriptions to change your meals, change the frequency, skip a delivery, pause or cancel. Make changes at least 2 days before your next order processes, because once it leaves the kitchen it cannot be edited. If you get stuck, the customer service team answers by live chat, email and phone on weekdays from 9am to 5pm.

What makes Field Doctor different?

  • Built around health conditions, not just calories. Few brands design whole ranges for IBS, menopause, PCOS or GLP-1 users.
  • Dietitian-led recipes with full nutritional information on every dish.
  • Low FODMAP and certified gluten free meals, which are genuinely hard to buy ready made.
  • Flexible: subscription or one-off, single or double portions, phone ordering.

The downsides are the £50 minimum, delivery charges below £67.50, and patchy coverage in the far north and on the islands.

Alternatives to Field Doctor

  • COOK: a much wider frozen menu of home-style dishes, sold in shops and online, with less focus on specific diets.
  • allplants: frozen plant-based meals, ideal if you eat vegan.
  • Frive: fresh, high-protein meals aimed at fitness and weight goals.
  • Parsley Box: cupboard-stored ready meals with no subscription, popular with older customers.
  • Mindful Chef: healthy, gluten free recipe kits if you are happy to cook.

Our verdict

Field Doctor is the best option we know of for ready meals that follow a medical or dietary brief. If you have IBS and need low FODMAP food, are coeliac, are on GLP-1 medication and struggle with portion sizes, or just want genuinely balanced meals without reading every label, it solves a real problem. The menu is varied enough to stay interesting and the subscription is easy to bend around your life. It is not a budget choice: once you hit the £50 minimum and add delivery, meals cost around £8 to £9 each. For people without a specific health goal, COOK or a recipe box may be better value. For everyone else, Field Doctor is well worth a try, and you can start with a one-off box.
