October 2026 is a dark month for book boxes. Illumicrate’s Fantasy box is themed “Dark Chemistry”, around an adult dark academia standalone, while FairyLoot has three themes on the go: “Terms & Conditions” for YA, “Tides of Treachery” for its Adult Book-Only plan and “Ruin & Desire” for Romantasy. Here is what each box promises, what it costs and which one to pick.
Illumicrate October 2026: Dark Chemistry
Illumicrate revealed its October Fantasy theme on 3 September 2026 in the Illumicrate Dark Chemistry announcement. The book of the month is an adult dark academia fantasy and a standalone: a young alchemist starts again at a prestigious alchemical university, only for its immortal Magistra to be murdered and the evidence to point back to the past she left behind. The reveal post keeps the title a surprise and flags a queer, morally grey heroine and a sapphic romance subplot.
The Illumicrate exclusive edition is a royal hardback with:
- an exclusive redesigned cover, with a reverse jacket showing a trade variant;
- full colour artwork on the hardback and digitally printed edges on all three sides;
- illustrated endpapers, different front and back, with art on the reverse;
- bonus content and a bound-in author letter with a digital signature.
The full box adds three themed items inspired by Dark Chemistry and by two fandoms, Blood Over Bright Haven and The Irresistible Urge to Fall For Your Enemy, including a fandom-neutral book pot and a mug by @rosiethorns88. Illumicrate publishes a long list of content warnings for the book, including body horror, suicide, grooming and drug use, so read the full list in the Illumicrate October post before you order.
Illumicrate prices, on the Illumicrate subscriptions page: the Illumicrate Box (Fantasy, book plus items) costs £31 a month, and the Book Only and Afterlight Romance plans cost £22 a month each. The same page also lists Evernight, Starbright and Mindsight options.
FairyLoot YA October 2026: Terms & Conditions
FairyLoot’s YA theme is about magical bargains and the fine print behind them. The book of the month follows a young woman who strikes a deal with a demon to save her arrested brothers. The box carries items inspired by The Knight and the Moth, The Gravewood, the book of the month and one fandom-neutral item, and this month that includes a reading journal.
The FairyLoot exclusive edition comes with a redesigned foiled cover, a reversible dust jacket, sprayed edges on all three sides, art on the hardcover and endpapers, bonus content and a signed copy. Prices on the FairyLoot subscription page: £27.50 a month for the YA Book + Items box (hardcover plus four themed items) or £20 for YA Book-Only.

FairyLoot Adult October 2026: Tides of Treachery
The Adult Book-Only plan goes to sea with “Tides of Treachery”, a pick for readers who like pirates, adventure and slow-burn romance. It is book only, categorised as adult and for readers aged 18+. The exclusive edition has a redesigned foiled cover, a reversible dust jacket, art on the hardcover and endpapers, sprayed edges, bonus content and an author letter. It costs £21 a month on the FairyLoot subscriptions page.
FairyLoot Romantasy October 2026: Ruin & Desire
“Ruin & Desire” is a post-apocalyptic fantasy with forbidden romance and found family. Like the adult plan it is book only and 18+, and this edition is signed by the author, with a redesigned cover, a reversible dust jacket, sprayed edges and art on the hardcover and endpapers. It also costs £21 a month, according to the FairyLoot price list.

Which October book box should you pick?
- For dark academia and the most extras: Illumicrate’s Dark Chemistry box at £31 a month, which pairs the book with three themed items (or £22 for the book only).
- For YA readers on a budget: FairyLoot YA Book-Only at £20, or £27.50 with four items and this month’s reading journal.
- For pirates and slow burn: FairyLoot Tides of Treachery at £21.
- For romantasy with a signed copy: FairyLoot Ruin & Desire at £21.
One catch applies to all three FairyLoot plans: new subscription spots were closed when the themes were revealed, and FairyLoot asks new readers to join a waitlist on the FairyLoot website. FairyLoot charges the YA plans on the 1st of each month, Romantasy on the 4th and Adult on the 5th.
