ToucanBox – August 2020: Arts and craft activities for a seven year old

The August toucanBox arrived just after we had been away for a few days so we set it aside to open once we’d caught up. Fortunately the rains then came so we had no excuses. ToucanBoxes are perfect for rainy days and afternoon crafting.

What was in the box?

  • Make your own honey bee and bamboo beehive kit
  • Children’s Day carp and Cherry Blossom painting set
  • Activity magazine
  • Stickers
  • Surprise magnet

Buzzing to get started

We absolutely loved this activity, so much so that I didn’t get a chance to take any photos! Not least until we had finished. The beehive was easy enough to make and only required very little help, just when it came to needing an extra pair of hands to fix it together with elastic bands.

We popped this in our apple tree and have been checking every day (weather allowing!) to see if we have any guests yet. We have a lot of lavender in our garden and have enjoyed spending lockdown watching the bees go mad for it. The make your own bee part of the kit was brilliant fun. I’d never heard or or seen strings covered in beeswax before but using them to create a bumblebee was really enjoyable and tactile. Our little man is currently keeping an eye on my office plant. My son enjoyed this kit so much that he made his own video.

Carps and cherry trees

This seemed like a slightly odd addition, but it was still good fun. Both activities involved minimal supervision from me but were a little more aimed at girls than boys which is why I’ve scored the box down ever so slightly.

These are quite good kits though if you have more than one child or are looking for things you could perhaps make and then give to friends/family as gifts.

As with every toucanBox you also get a little surprise which in our case was another magnet. This one is almost identical to the last one so its stuck on the fridge but it would have been nice to get something different. However these are obviously completely potluck so maybe we were just unlucky.

As well as the kits and surprise treat you also get an activity magazine and stickers. We had great fun making this scene and have set aside time to make the delicious chocolate banana bites.

Our score: 9.8/ 10

I've scored the box down ever so slightly due to the repeat magnet, and the fact that the carp and cherry blossom kit wasn't really an ideal choice for my son. However I am being really picky; this is another great box and we really loved it.
