Japan Candy Box – July 2020

Japan Candy Box is a box of quirky and fun Japanese candies and snacks. It can feature seasonal and limited edition items, which you won’t find anywhere else! It costs around £19 per month, and shipping is free worldwide.

Even the box is cute.

The little insert tells you all about the items in this month’s box, with a bunch of adorable little characters decorating it.

The theme this month is Japanese Fruit Market! which is perfect for the summertime.

Hi-Chew are probably the most famous of all Japanese chewy candies. They are amazing juicy little squares with seriously intense flavours. This one is Pineapple & Orange Duo, which is a combination of Brazilian oranges and Okinawa pineapple. These double flavour versions are rarely released, so it’s a treat to have it in the box!

Kasugai 100% fruit Juice Gummies have no artificial colours or flavours, and are made from 100% real fruit juice! I have the peach version here, which is a wonderful summer flavour.

Neri Ume Chewy Plum Strips showcase the traditional Japanese sour plum. They have a distinctive sweet-sour flavour that is unusual but surprisingly moreish!

These are a savory snack, Dragon Tarako & Butter Potato Snack. Tarako is salted cod roe, another traditional Japanese flavour. This combination of tarako and butter is uniquely Japanese and these crisp spirals have a seriously savory crunch.

Another wonderful Japanese savory flavour, this time Bourbon Petit Wasabi Potato Chips. These are tiny stacked crisps with a delicious spicy bite. If you like wasabi you’ll love these!

Umaibo are one of the most popular Japanese snacks. They are a stick of puffed corn and come in man different flavours. This one is Yasai Salad flavour, yasai meaning vegetables, and amazingly enough it does have a general flavour of vegetables.

Mocchan Dango Mochi look just like hamani dango, which are the little soft rice cakes eaten during cherry blossom season, and are a familiar sight in Japan. They are chewy and soft, and even the packaging has cute faces on it!

Marukawa Yellow Watermelon Bubblegum is flavoured with the less common yellow watermelon, and has a super fruity flavour.

Another less common fruity flavour, these are Meiji Kajyu Golden Kiwi Gummies. Golden kiwis are sweeter than the green kind, and these gummies are sweet and delicious. This version is a summer-only seasonal variety, and contains collagen.

Finally another fruity gummy candy, Luxurious Kumamoto Watermelon Gummies. These also contain lots of real fruit juice as well as collagen, and the watermelons themselves are a speciality of the Kumamoto Prefecture. These are another limited edition flavour, and even the little bear is the official mascot of Kumamoto!

Our score: 8.8/ 10

This fruity theme is just perfect for summer! I love all the different varieties of fruity gummies, and especially that they contain real fruit juice. While gummies are a popular candy in many places, it's really fun to be able to try exclusive flavours and varieties that you won't find anywhere else. I'm also glad to have the three savory snacks, especially the wasabi chips, as I'm a huge wasabi fan. This is a lovely selection with plenty to offer in terms of variety!
