The Vegan Kind – January 2018

You may have seen something on social media called ‘Veganuary’ this month, which encourages people to go vegan for January. I’ve been a vegetarian for over 10 years, and have become more and more interested in vegan products, especially with trying new foods and drinks that have come onto the market, so I was thrilled when I received a box from The Vegan Kind to try out.

The Vegan Kind offer a monthly vegan lifestyle subscription box that includes 5-8 products, all of which are 100% vegan, green and cruelty-free. They take all the hard work out of reading ingredients lists for you, and as they also run an online vegan supermarket, you can rest assured that their vast knowledge in this area can be completely trusted! In the box, you’ll receive a variety of products which are mostly food related, but you can also expect things like beauty treats, drinks, household cleaning products, home fragrance or makeup etc.

I couldn’t wait to open up the January box from The Vegan Kind! Here’s what I found inside:-

Schlagfix Schlagcreme Vegan Whipped Spray Cream (RRP £2.49)

The first product that I pulled out was a Vegan Whipped Cream! I’ve never seen one of these before, but being a Hot Chocolate lover, I couldn’t wait to try it out. The texture is virtually identical to regular squirty whipped cream, and taste-wise, it’s sweet, but not overly sweet – the balance is just right! I’ve tried it on several cups of Hot Chocolate and it works perfectly with that, so I’m looking forward to trying it out on cakes and fruit salads next.

Fat Gay Vegan: Eat, Drink, Live Like You Give A Sh*t by Sean O’Callaghan (RRP £8.99)

One of the best ways to educate yourself about veganism is to read a book on the subject, and this one by Sean O’Callaghan provides lots of information for newbies from nutrition to debunking popular vegan myths. It’s one of those books that you could either read from cover to cover or dip in and out of, but either way, I really like the author’s writing style and would recommend it as an introduction to veganism for anyone who is interested in learning more.

Organica Golden Coconut Delight Dark Chocolate Bar (RRP £0.99)

Vegan Bounty Bar anyone?! I love regular Bounty and when I saw this, I was super curious to see how it would compare. Admittedly, this one is wrapped in a layer of dark chocolate instead of milk, BUT it’s still pretty similar and I really enjoyed it! It’s not as sickly sweet and the chewy coconut filling was super satisfying as a cheeky afternoon snack. I’d definitely buy these again!

Brave Foods Roasted Peas – Garlic & Chive flavour (RRP £1.19)

Next up, I tried this bag of Roasted Peas from Brave Foods. This packet contains more protein than Cashews and fewer calories than Popcorn for the perfect on-the-go healthy snack that’s packed full of natural energy to help you get on wirh your day. Made with all natural ingredients, the Roasted Peas are coated in a sugar-free Garlic and Chive seasoning which is super moreish and would be ideal for lunchboxes.

Clearspring Organic Instant Porridge (RRP £2.99)

I was pleased to see a box of porridge included in this month’s box as I’d recently run out of my usual brand. This organic, gluten-free instant porridge is from Clearspring and contains added Buckwheat, Coconut and Flaxseeds for a mega healthy breakfast. I tried it this morning with some almond milk and it was delicious! Very quick and easy to make too.

Terra Vegane Alfredo White Sauce Mac n Cheese (RRP £3.20)

Another quick and easy to prepare food product is Terra Vegane’s super popular Alfredo Mac n Cheese. I love Mac n Cheese, and have tried a couple of delicious vegan ones from various brands before. This one is especially good! The ingredients are organic and contain plant protein for a fast tasty lunch. The sauce is lovely and creamy (very cheesy!), and this box is enough for a good 2-3 servings.

Eat Real Hummus Chips Sour Cream & Chive flavour (RRP £0.45)

I’m always looking for healthier crisps to try and love these Hummus Chips from Eat Real. I hadn’t tried this Sour Cream and Chive flavour before though, but I know I’ll be buying more of these in the future! Gluten-free and 48% less fat than regular potato based crisps – yum!

Free From Fellows Rhubarb & Custard Sweets (RRP £1.89)

The final eighth product from this month’s box is a bag of sweets – yay! These are brand new Free From Fellows Rhubard and Custard Sweets which taste just like the classic sweets, but are made without gelatine, gluten and sugar – yes, there’s no sugar in these so they are guilt-free – hooray!

At the bottom of the box, I also found a recipe card for a vegan Pad Thai which sounds incredible! In the sixth month of your subscription with The Vegan Kind, they’ll send you a ring binder, so make sure you keep these recipe cards somewhere safe until then!

Our score: 9.8/ 10

An excellent box from The Vegan Kind with lots of tasty new vegan-friendly products! I really love the variety and think that it's brilliant value for money.
