YumeTwins – Japanese Kawaii September 2022

At this time of year, Japan celebrates the Harvest moon with special Moon Viewing parties, in a festival called Tsukimi.

This month’s YumeTwins box gives the celebrations a kawaii twist!

The menu booklet tells you all about the items inside. There’s also a ton of interesting stuff to read about the festival itself, kawaii characters and symbolic references included in the box, and there’s even a recipe to make the traditional Dango (dumplings) that represent the shape of the moon.

YumeTwins Exclusive Rilakkuma Dango Plushie

Here’s the most obvious representation of the dango! This adorable Rilakkuma plush is in the shape of three little dango (rice dumplings) in different colours, a snack that you see all the time at Japanese festivals. He’s super cute and soft, and a really fun and unusual design for a plush.

Kawaii Kirby Japanese Stationery (notebook), Mt Fuji and the Moon Kawaii Sticky Notes

Japanese stationery is always both adorable and useful. Apparently Kirby from the Nintendo game is a fan of dango, so it’s appropriate he should appear here! This cute notebook shows Kirby surrounded by delicious Japanese traditional snacks having a feast! It’s a lovely notebook too, the pages are decorated and it’s the perfect size to keep in your bag or use as a diary.

The sticky notes come in a handy little folder and are beautifully decorated too. Just right for leaving phone messages or making notes in your diary, or as I use them, shopping lists!

Rilakkuma Rabbit Candy Bottle, BT21 Cooky Magnetic Cable Wrap

This sweet little jar has one of Rilakkuma’s pals, Kiiroitori sitting on top wearing a rabbit costume. One of the most famous Japanese folk tales is called the Rabbit in the Moon (you can read it in the menu booklet too!) and so Rilakkuma and his pals are dressed to celebrate this story. Even better, the jar contains individually wrapped peach candies, and when they’re finished (which will be fast because they’re delicious) the jar can be used for storing small items.

The K-Pop group BTS has created a group of adorable kawaii characters, and one of them, Cooky – a weightlifting rabbit – is featured on this useful accessory. It can be used to wrap your phone or headphone cables, and the clasp is magnetic so can also stick to anything that’s metal. It’s a really cute way to keep those annoying cables tidy, and the magnetic clasp is very clever.

Our score: 9.6/ 10

As always my favourite thing about YumeTwins is the combination of cute and useful. The notepad and notebook are welcome additions to my stationery collection, and the cable wrap is very handy indeed for my bag. I'm always happy to get sweeties too, and the jar is too adorable! As for the plush, well, not everything has to be useful, it can just be adorable! I also need to give and extra shoutout for the menu booklet, which is really very interesting to read. I love the combination of traditional culture and the newer kawaii culture, and it's very claver how they combine the two. All together this is an excellent collection this month!
