ToucanBox is an arts & crafts subscription service for children aged 3-8 designed to keep their little hands busy and their curious minds racing through a selection of exciting activities. Each letterbox-friendly box (personalised with your child’s name) contains two activity packs full of inspiration and materials, a colourful magazine and a small surprise gift. This month Penny received a magnet and also a wall planner with stickers.
This month’s pack was Halloween themed and my little girl, Penny (aged 6) couldn’t wait to rip into it and get started. Her boxes are always a highlight of the month and she’s absolutely delighted when it arrives.
Super Spooky Luminous Lantern
Contents: Detailed instructions with pictures, pre-cut templates, slides, foam strips, light pack and stickers.
Our first activity was to construct a lantern by aligning the frames and piecing them together. This activity is great for developing your child’s construction and fine motor skills. It did require quite a bit of grown-up assistance but we had lots of fun working together. We used the foam strips provided to stick everything together so there was no messiness and very little to tidy up afterward. It was fantastic switching the light on and seeing the spooky shadows cast across the wall.
Bug Blaster & Scuttling Spider’s Web
Contents: Felt spider’s web, PVA glue, silver ribbon, elastic bands, sticky eyes, velcro wings and beads.
Penny loved building her catapult! This activity allows children to discover how potential energy can store up in a stretched elastic band and practice their hand-eye coordination skills. Not to mention… it’s lots of fun! It was relatively simple to assemble the web-shaped target board but the catapult needs a lot of adult supervision. She loved creating the little fly friends and the body of the spider. ToucanBox also provides a mini scoresheet at the end of the instructions and a QR code to a YouTube video with a step-by-step tutorial if further help was required.
The magazine provided is very interactive and full of activities, colouring-in pages, easy science experiment ideas, math puzzles and Halloween-themed recipes. There’s also a sticker sheet to accompany it.
