Le Petit Ballon – September 2016

Le Petit Ballon Review

September’s Le Petit Ballon box arrived containing two bottles of ruby red wine – now, correct me if I’m wrong but, that’s always a plus in my book, especially at this time of year, when the sun is hiding it’s warmth and the cold starts nipping at your toes; I find myself relaxing on the sofa with a (very large) glass of red – this is one of my favorite vices.

This month’s box consisted of a Pierre-Marie Fleurie 2014 and a Domaine Eyguestre La Source 2014; also included was the usual tasting cards and the monthly Le Petit Ballon Gazette magazine.

All wines that feature in Le Petit Ballon boxes have been carefully selected by Jean-Michel Deluc, a master sommelier, formerly of the Ritz, London.

Le Petit Ballon

Domaine Eyguestre – La Source 2014 – AOC Côtes Du Rhône-Villages Séguret (14.5%)

This wonderful deep red wine has been described as the perfect accompaniment to lunch; enjoy with red meats and cheeses. With black fruit and spicy notes, this make for a deliciously powerful drop of goodness.

The tasting notes are as follows:

Eyes: A wine almost as black as it is dense in colour and balance. Crimson reflections during its youth.

Nose: The nose is intense with aromas of black fruit and ripe stone fruit, especially cherry. The minerality is a sign of a good terroir.

Mouth: The wine is fleshy and tasty. We appreciate the blend of black fruits which brings the wine to a crunchy finish.

Le Petit Ballon

Domaine De Vissoux – Fleurie 2014 (13%)

A charming red, traditionally made with gamay grapes in the Beaujolais region in the heart of France. This fruity, yet floral offering pairs well with grilled red meat, cheeses and salmon.

The tasting notes are as follows:

Eyes: Intense ruby red with the carmine tints of youth and star-bright showing that the wine is fresh.

Nose: Floral notes of iris, violet and peonies which complements the touches of sun-gorged black fruit and hint of mineral when the wine is aerated.

Mouth: The palate is full and classy with a subtle fruit and mineral base. The palate is dominated by redcurrant and raspberry.
