Le Petit Ballon – March 2017

Le Petit Ballon

It seems that Le Petit Ballon gets more exciting with every monthly box; just when you think they’ve produced a ‘great’ box, they go and send an even better one the following month- and March’s is no exception. Let me hope, skip and jump straight into the goodness that is Le Petit Ballon……..

What’s in the Box……..

This month Le Petit Ballon box consisted of the usual 2 bottles as below: A bottle of white, Le Vigneron Savoyard Initiale 2016 and a bottle of red; Domaine Coudoulis Evidence 2015.

As well as the wines, the box also includes the usual wine tasting cards that help and guide you to make the most of your subscription; these tasting cards also offer insight into a brief history of their origins. I also received the March edition of Le Petit Ballon’s monthly Gazette magazine; the themed this month is ‘Winter Wines’. Le Petit Ballon offer a range of tips and facts on everything to do with winter , and of course, wine – they’ve even included a recipe for mulled wine, the perfect go-to when you’re feeling a little under-the-weather, frost bitten and in need of a winter warmer or two!

All wines that feature in Le Petit Ballon boxes have been carefully selected by Jean-Michel Deluc, a master sommelier, formerly of the Ritz, London.

Le Petit Ballon

Domaine Coudoulis – Evidence – 2015 (14.5%)

This beautiful deep red, fruity wine – with a very cool name to say the least – is well balanced and ideally enjoyed with chilli, cheeses or fish.

The tasting notes are as follows:

Eyes: The wine has a ruby colour with purple and violet reflections, intensifying towards the rim of the glass. A very visually appealing wine!

Nose: On the nose, the fruit aromas really come to the fore showcasing it’s sun-kissed charm. Generous and full with menthol and licorice complementing the fruit.

Mouth: The palate is soft, round and incredibly fruity. On the finish, the wine tends on a cooler, more herbal note with crisp tannins.

Le Vigneron Savoyard – Initiale – 2016 (12.5%)

This light, fresh and fruity wine is super perfect for spring and is ideally enjoyed with sushi and fondue among other things.

The tasting notes are as follows:

Eyes: The wine has a pale, golden colour with a silvery rim, suggesting freshness.

Nose: On the nose the fruitiness of the wine becomes evident with ripe apricot, peach, pear and citrus as well as some delicate mineral and floral notes.

Mouth: On the palate the wine is far richer; almost honeyed! There are delicious flavour of peach and apricot, with a thirst-quenching acidity and a cool, herbal finish with some mineral nuances.
