Flaviar have become well known now for expertly sourcing the very best spirits from around the world, and they work with many independent producers who make exclusive small batches for them. I highly recommend checking out their online ‘vault’ to get an idea of what they’re all about as they really do appeal to spirits connoisseurs and those who want to learn more about what they’re drinking.

For this quarter’s tasting box, I chose The Many-Faced Gin box which features three different gins in a presentation box, complete with a white Flaviar branded coaster and tasting notes. The box is sent via courier to the UK and takes around a week to arrive. As you can see, everything arrived in perfect condition thanks to the sponge cushion packaging which protects the bottles during transit.

Each bottle of gin is a ‘tasting size’ which is 45ml, so let’s try them out!

Kimerud Small Batch Distilled Gin (47%)

This small batch gin comes from Kimerud who have a distillery on their family-run farm just outside of Oslo, Norway. They’ve been around since 2014 and their gin is distilled from potatoes from the farm, which is then infused with a complex blend of 22 botanicals (also harvested from their farm). This results in a gin which has some interesting flavours coming through with hints of Citrus and Fruity Berries. There’s also a freshness there from Cucumber and a little sweetness from Sugar which makes it a delicious blend overall. Perfect in a G&T!

Perry’s Tot Navy Strength Gin (57%)

Most gins that I’ve tasted have been around the 42-47% mark when it comes to strength, so it was interesting to try a much stronger one. This American gin from Perry’s Tot hails from New York and is definitely a strong one! Suitably named ‘Navy Strength’, it packs a real punch at a whopping 57% and has a clean, dry taste with undertones of Fruity and Floral notes. It’s not one that I would choose to drink on a regular basis, but for special occasions, it certainly makes a mean gin cocktail!

Cambridge Distillery Japanese Gin (42%)

This one confused me when I first saw it; a Japanese gin made by a Cambridge Distillery?! Indeed, this creation marries the two together and is made in Cambridge in one of the UK’s smallest distilleries. Founded in 2011, the Cambridge Distillery uses some innovative 21st tech to bring their gin to life and they’re definitely doing something right. It’s one of the best that I’ve tried in a long time and my clear favourite from this tasting box.

This Japanese Gin has a beautifully crisp, spicy and balanced taste which goes down smoothly. Along with the Spicy notes, it also has some Sweet and Floral undertones which just work so well together. I need to buy a full-size bottle ASAP!

Our score: 9.0/ 10

An interesting selection of craft gins with varying strengths and flavours. It was great to have the chance to try some new gins from three different corners of the world and I've found a firm new favourite - the Cambridge Distillery Japanese Gin is a definite winner!
