Degustabox – October 2017

When it comes to food subscription boxes, Degustabox are one of the most affordable and well-known on the market. Every month, you can expect to receive a large box of food and drink products which will include a mixed variety of established household names, as well as some newcomers and brand new product releases. Many of the products are available from your local supermarket, so it’s a great way to try out a bunch of new items and then pick them up again during your next grocery shop. I think Degustabox is particularly great for families and students alike, and the low-cost monthly subscription fee offers excellent value for money.

So then, shall we see what’s in October’s Degustabox?

Feel Good Drinks – Strawberry & Mint Infusion and Orange & Mango (RRP £1.20 each)

First up, we have two drinks from Feel Good who I regularly buy from, especially when I need a drink on the go as they are 100% natural and contain no added sugar. The Orange & Mango flavour I’ve drunk many times and always enjoy, but the Strawberry & Mint one is a newbie from their Infusions range and it’s lovely and refreshing! I would definitely buy it again and will look out for the other flavours to see what they have on offer.

Nuttvia Breadsticks Snackpack (RRP £1.70)

This is interesting as it’s a low sugar version of Nutella! The snackpack contains a generous portion of Nuttvia Hazelnut Chocolate spread which is made without Palm Oil (hooray for the Orangutans!) and also contains 97% less sugar. Instead, it’s made with Stevia sweeteners and despite the low sugar content, it’s actually very tasty and rather similar to Nutella so if you’re looking for a healthier sweet fix, try this.

Valfrutta Spelt with Black Olives, Dried Tomatoes and Capers (RRP £2.29)

Intially I thought this was rice at first glance, but it’s actually a microwaveable pouch of Spelt which also contains Black Olives, Dried Tomatoes and Capers for a tasty, ready in minutes, Mediterranean style dish. I really enjoyed this and these would be great to have in the cupboard for when you want to whip up a quick lunch or dinner. Delicious hot or cold, you can use it in salads or add your protein of choice for an even more filling meal.

2 x Pip’s Real Hot Chocolate Coins in Orange (RRP £1.50 each)

Hot chocolate is one of the most delicious drinks, if not the most delicious drink that you can make on a cold day to instantly warm you up, so I was excited to try these chunky Real Hot Chocolate Coins from Pip’s. They’re handmade, infused with natural Orange flavouring and are also Nut-Free, Dairy-Free and Gluten-Free, so lots of people can enjoy them. To use them, you simply add them to a warm pan of milk and voila – delicious orange hot chocolate!

LoSalt (free sample)

Degustabox love to include free samples and this month there’s a sample of LoSalt which is a healthier version of salt as it’s 66% less sodium than regular table, sea and rock salts. It tastes almost the same as normal salt so it’s the ideal way to reduce the sodium intake for the whole family. Thanks Degustabox!

Michel et Augustin Super Cookies (RRP £1.60)

This pack contains two large chocolate chip cookies which are made with real fresh Butter and Free Range Eggs. Bite into it, and inside is a sweet milk chocolate filling with chunky pieces of hazelnut – these are so moreish!

Pulsin Kids Fruity Oat Bar in Orange Chocolate Chip (RRP £0.59)

For a healthier snack, there’s a Kids Bar from Pulsin which is made from Gluten-Free Oats, real Fruit and all natural ingredients, plus it contains 1/3 less sugar than most other kids’ fruit snacks. High in fibre and contributes as 1 of their 5 a day, this is a great option for lunchboxes and afterschool snacks.

Lee Kum Kee Sauce for Tomato Garlic Prawns, Sauce for Honey Garlic Spare Ribs (RRP £0.85 each) and Sweet Soy Sauce (free samples)

Next in the box, I found some ready-made Chinese sauce packets from Lee Kum Kee. I haven’t tried the one for Honey Garlic Spare Ribs yet as I’m a vegetarian, so I might try it with some Quorn next week, but the Tomato Garlic Sauce was great over some veggies! I also liked the Sweet Soy Sauce which makes an excellent dipping sauce for Spring Rolls and Won Tons.

Kabuto Rice Noodles in Thai Green Chicken Curry (RRP £1.99)

I gave this one to my sister to try as it has real chicken in it (which I was surprised to see as most noodle pots of this nature usually just have the flavouring which is often bizarrely suitable for vegetarians!), and she really liked it. It has no additives or preservatives and is made from natural ingredients, so a good healthier option to the likes of Pot Noodles for a quick and easy lunch.

Heinz No Added Sugar Hoops (RRP £0.75)

I haven’t eaten Heinz Spaghetti Hoops in years so I can’t remember what they tasted like before the No Added Sugar options were added to the range, but this was pretty good on toast! Always handy to have something like this in the cupboard, especially if you’re a student!

Hippeas In Herbs We Trust (RRP £2.29)

I love these! If you haven’t tried them before, they’re basically light and crunchy savoury puffs made from Organic Chickpeas (similarish to Wotsits in texture, if a little drier) and this herby flavour is awesome! Vegan-friendly, Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free and Corn-Free, they also don’t contain any MSG, Trans Fats or Preservatives and are high in fibre. A serving is only 91 calories too so they’re a tasty and healthier alternative to crisps.

Pechkeks Misfortune Cookies (RRP £1.50)

As it’s Halloween next week, no Degustabox would be complete without a couple of Halloween friendly treats. This one from Pechkeks is a Misfortune Cookie; a black coloured fortune cookie that contains a strip of black humour instead of the usual ‘fortune’ – hilarious, I know so many people I could give these to!

Vimto Millions Gift Jar (RRP £2.99)

The last product that I found in this month’s Degustabox was a Gift Jar of Vimto flavoured Millions sweets. I don’t think I”ve ever tried Millions before, but they’re tiny pieces of chewy candy and as you can see, these ones are Vimto flavoured which is interesting! Definitely something that will be brought out when I’m next having a catch up with friends over a horror movie.
