Weekend Box – February 2019: Gruesome Germs and fantastic fun

This was our first ever Weekend Box and we were excited to see what would be inside. We were signed up to the Variety Box which contains four art and craft, cooking, planting/up-cycling and exploring activities. They are suitable for 3-8 year olds and can be delivered every fortnight or every month. Delivery is free, the first box is £4.48 and then after that it’s £8.95 per box.

What was in the box?

The theme of our box was ‘Gruesome Germs’ which was pitched just about right for my five year old son. We had the following activities in our box:

  • Game: Make your own tooth-brushing ‘fight the plaque’ game
  • Cook: Make your own apple and cinnamon jam
  • Craft: Make your own lavender soap
  • Create: Make your own moving germs
  • In addition there is also a mini magazine, stickers and the bottom of the box can be re-purposed into a bedroom door hanger.

The highlights

We LOVED making the jam. It was great that it was a slightly unusual flavour (not strawberry), and fantastic that all we needed to buy was one apple. We made two mini jars of jam and my son really enjoyed helping to chop the apple, mix in the cinnamon and see how it all turned into jam at the end.

My history with jam making is a bit hit and miss so I was pleased we were able to make a success of it and it tasted delicious. I really loved spending time together and we also talked about why people make jam, how you sterilise jars to keep the germs away and what other crazy flavours we could come up with. The instructions were clear and easy to understand and we had great fun.

We also had a lot of fun making soap! It was really good fun, and a but of insight for my Lush bath bomb-obsessed son! Everything we needed was supplied and it was a brilliant way to learn and have fun (and get clean too!)

Next up was the Game. Once again all the little packs contained everything we needed for this task. This one was so simple I barely needed to do anything at all

My son had great fun making this and then playing it. It was a fantastic way to help learn about the importance of brushing your teeth and it was really fun too. I have actually moved the ‘pincers’ up to the bathroom and threaten to use them if I don’t think my son has done a good enough job!

The gift that keeps on giving!

We’ve not had a chance to make our own germs yet but I’ve kept the activity pack aside for a rainy day as I think we can have some great fun with this one. We also plan to make the door hanger too. This is one box that really has so much crammed in…we have loved it!

Our score: 10.0/ 10

I think for just under £9 this is an absolute bargain of a box (even more so if you get it as the £4.48 one!) The amount of activities you get and the range of these too means that even the most distracted technology obsessed child will want to get involved. We got through this in one weekend but we still have plenty of things to do and try, its a definite thumbs up from us!
