My Vitibox – May 2017: Deep Wines for Memorable Wine Tastings

There are a lot of wine subscription boxes currently available on the market, but one of the best in terms of value for money and consistent quality are My Vitibox.  All of the wines that you’ll receive as a subscriber are hand-selected (and tasted of course!) by the famed sommelier Alain Gousse (former head sommelier to many Michelin-starred restaurants including La Tour d’Argent and Le Crillon) and I really look forward to seeing what he has chosen every month.

The wines arrive via courier carefully packaged in a sturdy cardboard box, and you’ll receive a Tasting Notes leaflet which gives you more information on the selected wines and how to taste them properly.

The theme for May’s My Vitibox is called ‘Deep Wines for Memorable Wine Tastings‘ which adds a certain element of mystery and occasion don’t you think?

I received one bottle of red and one bottle of white as part of the monthly ‘Colours & Flavours‘ subscription offer:-Per Dona 2014, Château Dona Baissas, Côtes du Roussillon Villages (14.5%)

Starting off with the red, this wine comes from the Roussillon area in the popular Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in Southeastern France. The Château Dona Baissas wine has been classified as ‘one of the best’ in Languedoc-Roussillon since 1988, and this 2014 blend was a great year for it. Composed of a trio of Grenache (40%), Syrah (30%) and Carignan (30%), this wine boasts a high 14.5% alcohol volume which makes it a suitable pairing for the likes of dinner dishes such as Beef Carpaccio, Lamb Tajine and summer puddings like Raspberry Crumble.

I love the deep purple-red colour of this wine, and its aroma is pleasantly fruity with notes of Strawberries, Prunes and some hints of Chocolate. This is an intense and dry, medium-bodied wine with a strong aftertaste, but it goes down smoothly and is a high-quality red wine to enjoy this Summer.Les Fumées Blanches – Réserve 2016, François Lurton, Côtes de Gascogne (11.5%)

Given the strength of the red wine above and the overall theme of this month’s box, I was expecting the accompanying bottle of white wine to be a strong one as well, but what I found was actually a lovely and light Sauvignon Blanc instead. This is another southern French wine that’s made in the heart of sunny Gascony by the fifth generation winemakers, François Lurton, and Les Fumées Blanches Réserve is a pure Sauvignon Blanc that I throroughly enjoyed drinking.

In the glass, it’s a classic greenish-gold colour and it has a distinct aroma of fresh citrus fruits. This fruitness lives on in the flavour as well, as this Sauvignon Blanc has a fresh, light, semi-sweet taste to it with notes of Guava and Grapefruit. Like most white wines of this nature, it goes well with a wide range of Seafood dishes, as well as Goat’s Cheese and tangy desserts such as Lemon Cheesecake. I’ve enjoyed it with a fresh Goat’s Cheese salad and it’s a truly delightful wine to drink in the sunshine!

If you enjoy the wines that you’re sent by My Vitibox, you’ll pleased to know that subscribers also receive a generous 15% discount off any cases of the wines that are featured in the monthly subscription boxes – win win!

Our score: 9.2/ 10

Although I enjoyed both of these, the standout winner for me was definitely the Sauvignon Blanc - I could happily drink that all Summer!
