My VitiBox May 2014 Review

There’s nothing better than coming home after a long day at work to find that a box with two delicious wines has been delivered to your door.

My VitiBox comes with a small wine magazine, ‘The little guiede to the art of drinking’, with a full set of tasting guidelines and explenations.  Including the of the effect soil has on the wines, explanations of the different regions of France, grape varieties & the aromas associated with them,  best years for wine and a guide to tasting and detecting aromas.

I was however disappointed as I didn’t receive the small bottle of aroma described on their website or the tasting card & menu suggestions specific to the wines received in this month’s box.  I was looking forward to this new experience.  I did eventually find the tasting notes & menu suggestions online, but did miss having it at hand when I received the box and opened the wines.

There were two bottles of wine in the ‘Red Passion’ version of their wine boxes.

The L’Etoile De Bergey 2010 – Château Haut-Bergey was divine.  The pepper, wood and vanilla aromas were clearly felt, and there were additional notes of chocolate and red berries.  It was a pleasure to drink.

The Piloums 2011, Domaine du Mas Blanc, Collioure, however, was less enjoyable.  It was drinkable, but felt like it was on the verge of turning.  Of the food pairing selections, I had no easy access to guinea fowl, roasted figs or Tomme cheese, so instead I made up the recommended pairing of a Mediterranean salad to see of that improved the wine.  It made it slightly more pleasant, but in the end I did not finish the bottle.

The main barrier for me in considering it as a subscription purchase is the hefty price tag of £36 a month for the Red Passion box, or £27 for the Colours & Flavours box plus an additional £5 for p&p.  A bit too rich for my blood. Overall the box was enjoyable and if I was a serious wine connoisseur I might consider a continued subscription.

The team at My Vitibox aim to reveal the secrets of the world of wine to their subscribers. Month after month you will taste great wine hand-selected by Alain Gousse, My Vitibox’s expert wine taster. Along with the wine, they  provide the wine enthusiasts with articles, tips and facts on the art of winemaking.

There is also the Cellar Master Subscription plan, which aims to help subscribers build up their vintage wine collection.

Colours and Flavours plan: £25 per month plus P&P

Red Passion: £22 per month plus P&P

None at the moment.
