MicroBarBox – January 2018: Cocktail Club Box

I love indulging in some cocktails when I meet up with my friends at the weekend, so MicroBarBox is one of the most fun boxes that I can share with them – all you need to do is mix up the contents, pour them into glasses and enjoy! This monthly cocktail subscription box contains a variety of premium spirits and mixers (plus some little extras for the finishing touches!), and each box has enough in it to make between 4-6 cocktails.

As you can see, the box arrives well packaged, with each product tucked away into its own compartment. Cute!

MicroBarBox also include a handy Cocktail Menu which shows you how to make each drink so that you can learn how to create your favourite cocktails at home, whilst trying some new ones at the same time.

The Cocktail Menu changes every month and January’s box is themed around ‘healthier cocktails’ that are lower in calories, but which don’t compromise on taste (or alcohol volume!).

Inside the box, I discovered:-

  • 1 x Grant’s Blended Scotch Whiskey
  • 1 x Isle of Wight Distillery Mermaid Gin
  • 1 x Isle of Wight Distillery Rock Sea Vodka
  • 1 x Bramley & Gage Elderflower Liqueur
  • 1 x Folkington’s Indian Tonic Water Light
  • 1 x Folkington’s Club Soda Water
  • 1 x Big Tom Spiced Tomato Mix
  • 1 x Mini Tabasco Sauce
  • 1 x Lemon

There are 5 cocktails to make this month and they are all classic favourites that I think most people will love, plus they’re all under 100 calories!

Cocktail 1: Whiskey Sour

I’m not the biggest whiskey drinker, but I do enjoy a Whiskey Sour every now and then for a change. This one used 1/2 Grant’s Blended Scotch Whiskey, 2 tsp of freshly squeezed Lemon juice, 1 tsp of Caster Sugar and 1 tsp Water, which I added to my cocktail shaker, gave it all a good shake and then poured it into a glass with some ice. A nice strong drink and it’s only 74 calories!

Cocktail 2: Bloody Mary

Despite Bloody Mary being such a famous cocktail, I’ve never tried one before so I was pleased to finally get the opportunity to see what all the fuss is about! I poured 1/2 Isle of Wight Distillery Rock Sea Vodka and 1/2 the bottle of Big Tom into a glass with ice cubes and stirred everything together with a stick of celery, before adding a splash of Tabasco sauce. I find drinking tomato juice quite unusual, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it! This one came in at 83 calories and there’s enough to make two cocktails from the bottles provided.

Cocktail 3: Elderflower Collins

Now onto my beloved favourite – Gin! I love a good Elderflower Collins and this one was absolutely delicious! I used 1/2 Isle of Wight Distillery Mermaid Gin with 1/2 Bramley & Gage Elderflower Liqueur and added this to a glass with ice and the can of Folkington’s Club Soda Water. For an extra zing, I squeezed in a little fresh Lemon Juice for the finishing touch and it was oh-so-good! 94 calories.

Cocktail 4: Gin & Slim

Next up, it was time to make a classic Gin & Tonic. For this, I used the other half of the Isle of Wight Distillery Mermaid Gin and added it to a glass with ice and the can of Folkington’s Indian Tonic Water Light. Lovely and refreshing, with a wonderful ‘clean’ taste as always – if I could only drink one cocktail for the rest of my life, it would probably be a G&T! 99 calories well spent.

Cocktail 5: Scotch On The Rocks

The last cocktail for this month’s box was a good old Scotch On The Rocks. I definitely prefer a Whiskey Sour personally, but this simple mix of Grant’s Whiskey and ice makes a tasty drink to warm you up on a chilly night. Perfect for January and only 56 calories.

Our score: 9.6/ 10

January's MicroBarBox is full of classic cocktails and I was impressed that they managed to create a selection that were all under 100 calories. My favourites were, of course, the Gin related ones, but I really enjoyed trying a Bloody Mary for the first time as well!
