I Love Gin – September 2018: The Aromatic Autumn Box

I Love Gin is a monthly subscription box for gin lovers and a great way to try out artisan and premium gins that you may not have discovered yet. Every month features a different theme, so the contents change with that which makes it a very exciting box to have delivered as you don’t know what you’re going to get until you’re opening it up! What you can count on though is two mini bottles of gin and two bottles of tonics/mixers to go with them, so each box makes up to 4 G&Ts.

This month’s I Love Gin theme is called The Aromatic Autumn Box, which contains the following:-

  • Audemus Pink Pepper Gin (50ml)
  • Aber Falls Welsh Dry Gin (50ml)
  • Fever Tree Refreshingly Light Elderflower Tonic Water (200ml)
  • Fever Tree Refreshingly Light Aromatic Tonic Water (200ml)

As you can see, everything has arrived in perfect condition and is presented neatly within the box.

Let’s take a closer look at the contents, shall we?

Audemus Pink Pepper Gin (44% vol)

The first gin that I tried was the Audemus Pink Pepper Gin, which is made in small batches by two friends in Cognac, France. They wanted to avoid the very dry, Juniper-led style of gins that we’re all very familiar with, and instead, created the Pink Pepper Gin which features nine botanicals, including hand-picked Spanish Pink Peppercorns, Juniper, Cardamom, Honey, Tonka Beans and Vanilla.

This is a very special and different kind of gin flavour-wise, with a wonderful warmth and sweet spice to it, yet it still retains that traditional Juniper ‘zing’ so I can imagine many people enjoying it. It’s very smooth and elegant, and something that I would happily purchase a full-size bottle of.

Aber Falls Welsh Dry Gin (41.3%)

For the taste of something closer to home, the Aber Falls Welsh Dry Gin is from the first distillery of its kind in North Wales for over 100 years, and is made using locally sourced botanicals and Welsh water from the surrounding mountains around Aber Falls (known locally as the Rhaedr Fawr waterfall).

Distilled in small batches in traditional copper pots, this gin enjoys a maximum refined quality with a very clean and pure taste of a fantastic dry gin. Notes of Juniper, Angelica, Liquorice and Coriander Seeds come through the strongest and it makes a mighty fine G&T!

To accompany the gins, there are two mixers included from Fever Tree‘s new Refreshingly Light Tonic Waters range which has the same great taste as their regular line, but with fewer calories – hooray!

On the left is the Elderflower version which is gently flavoured with handpicked English Elderflowers and has a sweet, floral and slightly citrusy undertone to it. I thought this went particularly well with the Aber Falls Gin as it helped to balance out some of the dryness. On the right, is the Aromatic tonic water which paired well with the Audemus Pink Pepper Gin. It’s infused with South American Angostura Bark and is quite sweet with subtle notes of Orange Bitters for a little-added zest.

Our score: 9.8/ 10

What a fantastic way to bring in the new season?! This theme was perfect in every way and I loved trying out two new gins that I hadn't come across before.
