I Love Gin – September 2016: Gin O’clock

I Love Gin, Jodetopia, Gin Box, 6 O'Clock Gin, Peter Spanton Tonic Water, Review

I Love Gin is a subscription box perfect for the gin lover in your family. Four G&T’s delivered straight to your doorstep – what more could you want (especially after a long week at work!).

Each box includes two gins, two tonics picked to perfectly compliment the gin, and a recipe card. This month’s box was cleverly named ‘Gin O’clock Box’ as the gins featured were both 6 O’Clock Gin.

The recipe card gives background information on both the gins and tonics, and also gives you tips on how to get the best serve – chill your glass before serving, pour tonic down the side of the glass to avoid fizz and add complimentary garnishes!

The gins themselves are smooth and enjoyable. My boyfriend preferred the sloe gin, which he paired with the cardamom as the recipe card suggested to. He found these complimented each other well, and made for a very tasty G&T! The Sloe Gin was a little weaker so easier to drink. The normal Gin was still very nice, however could have benefitted from a more stronger flavour of tonic water – maybe instead of just a lemon wheel, some lemon crushed up in the drink would have been better also!

I love the packaging of these gins – very eye catching and appealing, and would look great to serve up when hosting guests!

The No1 Tonic Water had citrussy top notes of lemon and orange, which compliments the citrus in the gin, however as this wasn’t a strong flavour it gets lost amongst the strong alcohol level of the gin. The Cardamom did leave a bit of an aftertaste, which isn’t to everyone’s taste preferences.

The only slight negative I have about the I Love Gin box, is that I think their packaging could be improved – the Gins came packaged in a padded brown box which when opened to reveal the contents when folded out. Although they have their logo on the front of the box, I think the service would be improved with some more presentation – even if it was simply some white shredded paper like I have used in the photos. Opening a brown box with four bottles and a small pamphlet inside wasn’t the most exciting, and doesn’t do the box justice!

For £14 a month you get the monthly gin box and also when you sign up to an I Love Gin subscription, you get access to member only discounts in their online store – perfect for purchasing full sized bottles of your favourite gins!
